..and it’s blast off for Britain

IT was one small step for Cornwall and one giant leap for the UK yesterday as Britain’s first spaceport got its licence to launch rockets to the stars.

Spaceport Cornwall, at Cornwall airport in Newquay, became the first of seven proposed similar ventures to get the UK Civil Aviation Authority approval.

It gives the site the go-ahead to begin operating, with the first launch by Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Orbit expected to take place in the coming weeks.

Melissa Thorpe, head of Spaceport Cornwall, said it was “a historic moment”.

She added it would “support the UK industry in harnessing the power of space to benefit life on Earth”.
