‘Homer’ hits other words out of park..

-

CAMBRIDGE Dictionary’s word of the year is “homer” after it caused a furore with Wordle fans.

The short form for a home run in baseball was searched for nearly 75,000 times in May when it was the answer to the puzzle.

The American spelling of “humor” was looked up the second most in 2022.

Wendalyn Nichols, Cambridge Dictionary publishing manager, said: “Wordle’s words, and the public’s reactions to them, illustrate how English speakers continue to be divided over differences between English varieties.”

Dictionary additions included “shrinkflation”, when an item gets smaller but its price stays the same.
