De Jong: Virgil is our rock

-

FROM DAVID MCDONNELL in Doha VIRGIL VAN DIJK has been hailed as the rock upon which Holland’s World Cup hopes are built.

The Liverpool defender (above) is the key man in Louis Van Gaal’s side, according to Dutch team-mate, Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong.

And De Jong claimed Van Dijk’s leadership qualities and ability to unite the Dutch squad will be key to their chances of success in Qatar.

“Virgil is a very important player for us,” said De Jong. “He adds a lot of class to the team, a lot of qualities, and he’s a good leader.

“He keeps everyone together and organises things on the pitch.

“You want to train with as many great players as possible and Virgil is one of the best in the world.”

Former Manchester United boss Van Gaal, 71, is in his third spell managing Holland, and De Jong added: “He has a lot of experience at the highest level, so knows what the pressure is at moments like that.

“He’s very clear in what he wants.”
