Middle England is heading for a ‘shock’ Tory MPS rebelling over Hunt’s policies

JEREMY Hunt’s brutal Autumn Statement means people have “just got a lot poorer” and those on middle incomes will suffer the most, economists have warned.

The Institute for Fiscal Studies gave a bleak verdict on the Chancellor’s £55billion of tax hikes and spending cuts, warning that higher taxes could last for several decades.

With household disposable incomes set to crash by 7% by 2023, the IFS said those on “middling sorts of incomes will feel the biggest hit”.

IFS director Paul Johnson said: “Middle England is set for a shock.

“They won’t benefit from the targeted support of those on meansteste­d benefits. Their wages are falling and their taxes are rising.”

As the recession takes hold, the IFS said a series of economic “own goals” by the Tories had worsened the UK’S “long, hard, unpleasant journey”.

In an article for the Mirror, the Labour leader Keir Starmer accused Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of picking the pockets of working people and “clobbering” their pay.

He said: “After 12 years of Tory government, we face the highest tax burden since the Second World War, soaring bills, and the biggest hit to living standards on record.”
