Island bird is found again after 140yrs

A RARE bird has been pictured on a small Pacific island more than 140 years after it was last seen.

The black-naped pheasant-pigeon was caught on camera on Fergusson Island in Papua New Guinea.

It is native to the isle but has not been documented since 1882. Researchers hope they can now save the bird from extinction.

They set up camera traps on the island’s highest peak after locals said they had seen and heard the bird.

Expedition co-leader John C Mittermeier, of the American Bird Conservancy, said: “To find something that’s been gone for that long, and then to figure out that it’s not extinct, it feels like finding a unicorn or a Bigfoot.”
