Wartime sub ‘spotted near Italian coast’

- BY MICHAEL HAVIS

A BRITISH submarine that vanished during the Second World War has been found, experts think.

An explosion heard near Monopoli in Italy in 1943 was thought to have been the sub’s death knell.

Four bodies that washed ashore in the following weeks were wearing British Davis escape gear.

But HMS Regent was never found. A wreck 70 miles off Monopoli turned out to be a different vessel.

Now Michele Favaron and Stefania Bellesso of the Acquelibere Sub Padova diving club think the wreck they found near the coast is Regent.

Fabio Bisciotti of the Italian Naval League said: “Nobody else was in this area.” The Royal Navy said more data was needed to confirm the find.
