I WILL NEVER FORGET HIS GOAL AGAINST ARGENTINA

- BY MIKE WALTERS

YOU never forget your first trip to Wembley – especially when the hero upstages Diego Maradona.

Somewhere up in the loft, I still have the England scarf I bought on Wembley Way before England’s 3-1 win against world champions Argentina in May 1980.

And without even having to look it up on Youtube, I always remembered David Johnson’s flying header from Steve Coppell’s cross to open the scoring. We were right behind it at the tunnel end. Great view, great goal.

For good measure, Johnson added the second from point-blank range, after Argentine keeper Ubaldo Fillol had flapped at Ray Kennedy’s pitching wedge chip.

At Ipswich and Liverpool, especially, Johnson was a top-class striker who deserved more than his eight caps yielding six goals.

England needed to be good to win that night. It was the first time most of us had clapped eyes on Maradona, and the boy wonder made a lasting impression.

One mazy run left four defenders for dead before his shot rolled agonisingly wide of the far post, and another slalom into England’s box ended with Kenny Sansom wiping him out at the expense of a penalty.

On a magical earlysummer night 42 years ago, David Johnson – God rest his soul - proved the difference.

Diego Armando Maradona would have better luck torturing England six years later.
