Waste not want not

Fast fashion is out. Make-do-and-mend is in…

Fashion designer and environmentalist Amanda Riley is on a mission with her Fashion Rebellion eco-sewing club to change the way future generations consume fashion.

After successfully putting sewing back on the curriculum in schools in London with her after-school sewing club, she now wants to change the world – one sewing machine at a time.

She says: “After working for years in the fashion industry, the second biggest polluter on Earth, I decided enough was enough and decided to create an antidote to fast fashion and teach young people how to turn old stuff into cool new stuff.”

Amanda has created an online programme for complete sewing beginners of all ages to learn the basics with her frustration-free videos.

She will also be hosting a free community sewing class from 10.30am-4.30pm this Sunday in The William IV, 786 Harrow Road, London NW10 5JX. Anyone can log-in and join in online. Email amanda@fashion rebellion.co.uk for more details. Amanda says: “It’s all the absolute basics to get you using a sewing machine confidently. If you can get the basics right, you can fly. And then you can get creative with

the things in your wardrobe you don’t wear. I’ve broken it all down and simplified it so anyone can learn. It will help people live a greener, more sustainable lifestyle and save money.

“And the best part is you can watch my videos over and over again until it’s second nature to thread up and repair, recycle, rewear.”

Mirror readers get a 20% discount with code DMSEW at checkout for Amanda’s online course, Learn To Use A Sewing Machine, at fashionrebellion. co.uk. The 14 short videos can be accessed 24/7 for six months and cost £20 instead of £25. And check out @the fashionfactory.uk on Instagram.
