THE SCOTTISH ISLAND THAT WON THE LOTTERY
Channel 4, 8pm
This charming documentary follows the real story of when inhabitants on an island in the Outer Hebrides won a £3million lottery windfall.
There are few places as remote as the isle of North Uist, which sits on the rugged north-western edge of the British Isles, almost as close to Iceland as it is London.
Famed for self-sufficiency and resourcefulness, the 1,500 islanders pride themselves on their long-standing traditions and ancient language.
It is not a cash-rich country though – or at least it wasn’t, until 101 of the islanders won millions in the Postcode Lottery in January 2020. But did it change their lives beyond recognition?
This film follows fisherman Donald, crofter Attar, postal worker Pamela, peat cutter Duncan and whisky distillery entrepreneurs Kate and Jonny as they deal with their bonanza.
In a rural idyll where you already have everything you need, what happens when you win the jackpot but don’t know how to spend it?
