Slack Friday
JUST a straggle of shoppers browse this usually thriving high street in Newcastle yesterday for Black Friday.
It was the same across much of the country, with many taking the day off or working from home and watching Wales and England’s World Cup matches.
While there were queues of bargain hunters at some stores in Birmingham,
Manchester and London, much retail business was being done online.
By mid-afternoon, Nationwide said its customers had made 4.52 million transactions, 8% up on last year. Barclaycard’s were 0.7% up.
Industry analysts Springboard said although trading conditions are tough “Black Friday was not a disaster”.
