Burglars sue homeowner who chased them down
Raiders ‘demand £1m’ for being thrown from bike
A MAN jailed for running two burglars off the road is now said to be being sued by them.
Adam White, 34, was sentenced to 22 months in prison for causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
But the raiders, Taylor Benford and Ryan Paul, both 25, were not jailed.
The pair, who had targeted Adam’s home, were each given suspended sentences and 200 hours of community service for the attempted burglary.
Before he was jailed, Adam, who had no previous convictions, said: “That
night is like a recurring nightmare. I still consider myself a victim. I feel bad these guys got hurt, but I don’t believe it was my fault.”
Adam’s wife Lindsay has now said the raiders are suing his car insurer for £1million because of injuries they sustained in the 2019 crash, including a fractured skull, bleeding on the brain and multiple broken bones.
Electrician Adam sped after the masked burglars in his Mercedes 4x4 after they fled from his home in Leighton Buzzard, Beds, armed with a crowbar and bolt cutters.
In the ensuing crash, the raiders were thrown from a stolen motorbike. They have a string of previous
convictions including for possession of an offensive weapon, theft, dangerous driving and drug dealing.
Adam, who was at home with Lindsay, 34, and their two kids at the time of the attempted burglary, was jailed in February at Luton crown court.
He spent £50,000 on legal fees and lost his job. Lindsay also said she had
an abortion as money was so tight while he was in jail. She said: “It took everything, including our child.”
The case features in the latest episode of Channel 4 show, 24 Hours in Police Custody.
An officer interviewing Adam tells a colleague: “I feel quite sorry for him. I’ve been burgled and if I’d been at home, I probably would have chased him.”
But lead investigator Det Insp Grant Maxted said: “If you choose to step outside the law, you take a risk. He’s going to have to face the consequences of his actions.”
Adam is on a tag after being released from jail in September. tom.pettifor@mirror.co.uk
