Eric & Mike made their impression

You could argue there are enough comedians on the TV pundit panels already without bringing a couple of them in.

But that was the case back in 1970 during the tournament in Mexico when the BBC used Eric Morecambe and Mike Yarwood in their coverage.

Both the funny men were club directors at the time – Eric at Luton Town and Mike at Stockport County. Eric said: “I’m all right as long as they don’t expect me to know the names of players. I do it by numbers.”

Ian Rush seems to be working to the same principle.
