Emergency power plan is called off

- BY GRAHAM HISCOTT Head of Business

NATIONAL Grid chiefs called off emergency plans to pay households and businesses not to use power at peak times today.

The operator had told suppliers such as E.ON and Octopus to prepare to enact a new system for the first time to avoid the risk of blackouts.

Under the plan, households who opted in would be paid to delay using their washing machine, tumble dryer or other appliances when demand is high, likely to be early evening.

The “demand flexibility service” is part of emergency measures to avoid rolling power blackouts in winter amid shortages.

In the end, the Grid cancelled the notice after judging it has enough electricity to meet demand.
