- BY TOM BURGESS

IT was a moment that pulled at readers’ heartstrings as Pooh and Piglet said farewell to their pals in Hundred Acre Wood.

And EH Shepard’s illustration for the final scene of the original Winnie-thepooh book could be someone’s to treasure forever as it is being auctioned off.

The 1926 drawing shows the two characters walking off “in the golden evening”, with Shepard’s pencil outlines of alternative arm positions still visible.

It is being auctioned at Bonhams, New York, on December 13 with a guide price of £210,000-£290,000.

Auctioneer Ian Ehling said: “We expect worldwide interest in this sale because it represents such a special opportunity for collectors to own a unique part of literary history.”
