A PERVERT ex-celtic youth coach jailed for abusing a teenager in Northern Ireland has died in jail.

Jim Mccafferty, 76, passed away at a Scottish prison where he was serving a sentence for more abuse. The paedo had served almost six years inside when he died on Saturday.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Prison Service said: “He was convicted at Edinburgh High Court in 2019. Police Scotland have been notified. A Fatal Accident Inquiry will be held in due course.”

PAEDOPHILE football kitman Jim Mccafferty has died behind bars, it’s been revealed.

The 76-year-old, who was jailed for a catalogue of abuse against young boys, died at HMP Glenochil on Saturday.

Mccafferty, who worked at Celtic, Falkirk and Hibs, was convicted at Edinburgh High Court in 2019 for a string of sex attacks on players stretching back to 1972.

During the trial, he admitted 10 charges of indecent assault and one of lewd and libidinous behaviour against boys aged as young as 11.

One of his victims was attacked at Celtic Park while others were assaulted at hotels, training grounds and in his car.

It was the second time he appeared in the dock, after he was jailed for three years and nine months in 2018, after admitting eight counts of sexual assault on a 14-year-old victim in Northern Ireland between 2012 and 2015.

The Scottish Prison Service confirmed his death in a statement on their website. It has been reported to the procurator fiscal, with a fatal accident inquiry to be held in due course.

A spokesperson for the SPS said: “James Mccafferty, 76, a prisoner at HMP Glenochil, has died on Saturday, November 19, 2022. He was convicted at Edinburgh High Court in 2019. Police Scotland have been notified and the matter reported to the procurator fiscal.

“A fatal accident inquiry will be held in due course.”

Mccafferty admitted his years of abuse when the Mirror confronted him in 2016.

At the High Court in Edinburgh in May 2019, he admitted charges related to child sex abuse against 10 teenage boys between 1972 and 1996. He was sentenced to six years and nine months in prison to add to the three years and nine months of jail term he was given in

Northern Ireland. Most of Mccafferty’s victims played for youth teams he ran in North Lanarkshire.

Four played for Celtic Boys’ Club and Celtic youth team. They were aged between 14 and 17.

Judge Lord Beckett said Mccafferty was “physically intimidating” and used his “overpowering” nature to achieve his “depraved objectives”.

He added: “You were adept at identifying the circumstances of different boys so you could manipulate them and, in some cases, their parents in a variety of ways. All of this was done to facilitate your sexual abuse of children.”

Mccafferty had previously said he did not know the true number of boys he abused. He was the fourth man connected to either Celtic or Celtic Boys’ Club to be found guilty of historical child sex abuse.

A fatal accident inquiry will now be held PRISON SPOKESMAN ON PROBE INTO DEATH
