It’s Alpha-bat Street.. range tops Prince

BATS have a greater vocal range than the best human singers like Mariah Carey and Prince, a study found.

Researchers who filmed what goes on in a bat’s larynx when it produces sound discovered they can span seven octaves.

Professor Coen Elemans, of University of Southern Denmark, said: “It is remarkable. Most mammals have a range of three to four, humans about three.

“Some human singers can reach four to five but they are very few. Wellknown examples are Mariah Carey and Prince.”

The study of Daubenton’s bats also found that for some sounds, they use their “false vocal folds” as death metal growlers do.

And their echolocation calls are made by vibrating thin vocal membranes.
