GERS COACH IS A FORMER BHOY SCOUT

-

INCOMING Rangers coach Damian Matthew knows the Old Firm rivalry well – having been a scout for Celtic.

New Ibrox boss Michael Beale is set to bring in three coaches from his old club QPR, with Matthew joining up along with Neil Banfield and Harry Watling.

Matthew was a youth development officer at Chelsea and moved to Charlton as a first team coach before he was axed in 2015 during a change of boss.

But he was helped back into football by the Hoops. In a podcast, Matthew revealed: “I became Celtic scout for London and the south-east of England.

“It was only a part-time role but it was healthy because it allowed me to watch games and see good young players. Celtic understood I was aspiring to get back into coaching and I joined Everton in 2016.”
