1956: Floyd Patterson became the then-youngest world heavyweigh­t boxing champion when, at 21, he beat Archie Moore.

2004: Four-time Olympic gold medallist Matthew Pinsent announced his retirement from rowing three months after his final triumph in Athens in the coxless fours.
