IN an equal country everybody would get the chance to succeed regardless of their background.

This is not the case in Britain where your prospects are still determined by the depth of your parents’ wallets.

Only 7% of people are educated at private schools but they make up 61% of the current Cabinet, 65% of senior judges and 57% of peers.

That this elitist cartel still exists in 21st century Britain is shameful enough but it is all the more disgracefu­l it is sustained thanks to generous tax breaks.

Keir Starmer is right to want to scrap the charitable status of fee-paying schools.

Rishi Sunak is trying to defend the indefensib­le. Perhaps this is not surprising from someone who gave his former private school £100,000 but refused the funds demanded for the post-covid education catch-up plan.
