UN heritage status is in la baguette
THE French baguette has been added to the UN cultural heritage list as a cherished tradition to be preserved by humanity.
Unesco experts at a gathering in Morocco decided the simple French flute deserved recognition.
The UN cultural agency’s chief Audrey Azoulay said it recognised the “savoir-faire of artisanal bakers” and “a daily ritual”.
Ms Azoulay, a former French culture minister, said: “It is important that these craft knowledge and social practices continue to exist in the future.”
Baker Asma Farhat, of Julien’s Bakery, Paris, said: “Of course, the baguette should be on the list.”
The French government now plans an artisanal baguette day, to be called the Open Bakehouse Day.
