THE iconic Jaguar driven by secret agent John Steed in 70s TV hit The New Avengers is on sale for £12,000 – but it has been trashed.

The 5.3- litre XJ12 seen with star Patrick Macnee at the wheel was bought by a collector after the series ended and later spent 20 years rotting in a lock-up.

The green bodywork is flaking, the seats are torn, dials are smashed and it does not start.

James McWilliam of H&H Classics in Warrington, Cheshire, said: “It looks like kids broke in. But it’s an exciting find and will really appeal to those who fondly remember the show.” TWO fire crews turned out to help a cow which had a garden chair stuck on its head but it freed itself in Boughton, Northants.

AN amateur pilot who learned to fly at Shoreham has been identified as another victim of the jet crash tragedy.

Tony Brightwell, 53, loved planes and was cycling to watch the air show when the Hawker Hunter crashed on to the busy A27, killing at least 11 people.

The health care manager – one of two victims confirmed dead yesterday – was awarded his private pilot’s licence at the airfield several years ago.

Fiancee Lara Ashby, 46, said: “I watched him cycle off into the sun on his treasured Ridgeback bike to watch the show for a couple of hours but he never came home.

“He was the love of my life, my soulmate and I am devastated that our plans of a life in the sun won’t now happen.

“He was a kind, loving man who always helped others and enjoyed spending time with family and friends over a bottle of red wine.” Mr Brightwell, of Hove, East Sussex – who leaves a daughter Gemma – was excited about seeing one of the final flights of the Vulcan bomber.

Heartbreakingly, it took to the air only after the disaster as a tribute to the victims.

A statement from Mr Brightwell’s family said their “darling bike warrior” would be forever in their hearts.

It went on: “He gained his private pilot’s licence many years ago at Shoreham and regularly went to the airfield to watch planes with a view to taking up flying again.”

The second victim confirmed dead yesterday was 23-year-old dad Daniele Polito.

His sister Marina wrote on Facebook: “As long as we keep him in our hearts and memories he will never really leave us.

“I miss you loads already little ( big) bro! Keep making people smile, love you always xxx”. A candlelit vigil and a minute’s silence will be held later today exactly a week after the crash.

At least four other victims have still to be officially named.

A motorist has been killed in an accident on the diversion route set up to avoid the crash site. Rob Holland, 20, of Durrington, West Sussex, died when his Ford Fiesta collided with a Vauxhall Vectra on the A280 at Long Furlong.
