WAR ON ERROR
Poch: We need to STOP fretting about new strikers & START defending properly
MAURICIO POCHETTINO insists sloppy errors, not a lack of signings, have hampered Tottenham’s start to the season.
Spurs have picked up just two points from their first three games after losing to an own goal at Manchester United, blowing a two-goal lead against Stoke and conceding an equaliser at Leicester just 90 seconds after scoring themselves.
Pochettino, whose side host Everton today, said: “If we have two points after three games it is not because we have a lack of players or we don’t sign one striker or one keeper, it is because we make some mistakes.
“This is about competing much better and this is our focus now – to compete. The players will agree with me and this is good because we realise at Leicester we lost two points.
“Come on, we scored, and then we switched off. Never in football can you switch off for one second.
“After we scored at Leicester there was a mistake, we conceded a goal and in the Premier League a professional team like us need to avoid that.
“The opponent can score or we can concede a chance because they deserve it but not because you give a possibility like Leicester City, like Manchester United or Stoke.”
Spurs have had two bids for West Brom’s Saido Berahino turned down and Pochettino added: “I am optimistic on the future, because if we had some real quality player I think our balance is better and I think that it will be a great season.”
Spurs did add some quality yesterday, signing South Korean forward Heung-Min Son, 23, from Bayer Leverkusen for £22million, subject to international clearance and a work permit. And Son ( left) said: “Spurs for me is such a big club and a really good team.
“My goal has always b been to play in the P Premier League and To Tottenham have given me a greatgre opportunity to do that and I am really happy to have the chance to come here.
“I love the Premier League and I am very excited to play at White Hart Lane. I have not played there yet but I’d Iove to go out there, show my abilities and perform for the fans as soon as possible.”
Son operates mainly as a wide forward but Pochettino hopes his arrival will ease the pressure on Harry Kane, who, despite his goal heroics last season, has yet to find the back of the net this term.
