Beaten OAP faces finger amputation

FRAIL pensioner Tommy Ward will today have a finger amputated after the brutal attack in which thieves took his £30,000 life savings.

The ex- miner, 80, is fighting for his life in hospital and doctors cannot save the index finger, which was snapped and left with just tendons attached.

Daughter Jackie Perry, 52, said: “We take one step forward and two back.”

But she was “stunned” an appeal by our the Sunday Mirror had raised more than £31,000.

She said: “It is fantastic news. I hope he recovers to know how wonderful everyone has been.” Support had come from as far away as Japan, she said.

Tommy was left with a fractured skull, broken ribs and a smashed jaw in the attack in his home in Maltby, South Yorks.
