30 chiefs ‘in on VW tests conspiracy’
AT LEAST 30 top managers at Volkswagen are to blame for the emissions scandal, it was claimed yesterday.
VW has insisted software fitted in 11 million cars to cheat regulatory tests can be traced to a small group.
But Germany’s Der Spiegel magazine reported that a large number of senior executives knew about the fix.
It said the conspiracy was exposed by an internal probe at the firm’s Wolfsburg HQ.
One mole said the diesel motor at the heart of the row, EA 189, had been rated against changing emissions rules globally since 2008.
Another said: “Any motor developer would have been put on guard by the engine’s ability to meet standards without expensive exhaust treatment technologies.”
US authorities have indicated they intend to put the culprits on trial for fraud.
