With a confidence and control that belies her youth, Elle Stevenson burst on to The Apprentice last night looking like a woman who will give any hard-nosed business boss a run for their money.

But the 21-year-old is nursing a heartache – her best friend Zander Moynes was found dead in Ibiza after an accidental drugs overdose on an all-night boozing session.

And while Elle, who describes herself as “disgusting­ly ambitious”, has struggled to deal with the tragedy, she now has to face Lord Sugar’s brutal attack dog Claude Littner on the BBC show.

The pressure was already growing on the opening show when she said: “I feel like when Claude looks at you he’s burning a hole in your face.”

But before she appeared, Elle’s thoughts were with her childhood pal Zander, who was 20 when he died in June. She tweeted: “Would give anything for one of your pep talks right now kid. Love and miss you so, so much.”

And she frequently pays tribute to him on Facebook.

Elle wrote: “What I would give now to be hiding behind my bathroom door trying to hold my breath as you crept past with your water pistol trying to find me.

“I miss our play fights that never seemed to end in anything but broken china or limbs. “I miss you trying and failing to teach m me how to ride your BMX off your ramp and twist it round in mid-air. What I would give, Zand.”

Alongside a picture of Zander near their homes, she said: “I will forever think of Zander like this, at our favourite spot by the lake with our dogs.
