An FSF spokesman said: “Fans on the continent are often surprised at the cost of football on these shores and not just in the top flight either.”

The average admission price paid in the Football League across their 72 clubs was £14.08.

And FL chief executive Shaun Harvey insisted: “Football League clubs continue to offer compelling football at a price that is affordable.”

Among the other standout findings in the Price of Football study, the cost of the average replica shirt is £42.18 for adults and £33.66 for children, while non-league Kiddermins­ter sell the most expensive pie for £4.50.

A Premier League spokesman said: “The study’s focus on single match tickets is misleading as the vast majority – two thirds – of Premier League match attenders are season ticket holders. Our research shows that the average price paid by them is £32.50 for adults and £10 for juniors.”
