CHAMP MAN 16

-

iOS, Android Free with in-app purchases

This game takes the fight to Football Manager on mobile devices, letting you run a football club, taking them from the lower rungs of the league to top-flight football.

You’ll have full control over formations, tactics, transfers and more. But it’s not a hardcore simulation as you don’t have granular control over every aspect of a club, as you would with a PC management sim for instance.

However, your choices do have meaningful results on the pitch – a few deft formation changes and squad shuffles saw my chosen team perform far better than the default starting 11, even without braving the transfer market.

Though a free-toplay game, Champ Man 16 isn’t shy about pushing in-app purchases under your nose. Its biggest crime is to charges you 99p to manage any of the game’s top clubs straight off the bat. Those not willing to cough up can earn these ‘coaching badges’ and jump to a top-flight club by ploughing through the game for a few hours.

Less offensive are options including paying real money for a larger transfer budget, although it does unbalance the game.

Still, it’s no worse than a Russian oligarch coming in and propping up a middling club. Just like the real thing then! £60, or £50 with special offers and sponsored screensavers
