CARROLL STINGER

Bilic: I’ve heard tales of Andy’s poor attitude

SLAVEN BILIC has admitted he is keeping a close eye on Andy Carroll after revealing he had heard “stories” about the England striker’s attitude before arriving at Upton Park.

Former boss Sam Allardyce has claimed in his new book that the £15million forward “could be an even better player if he pushed himself and put the work in”.

Far from slamming the new Sunderland boss ( below), Bilic reckoned the hearsay about the injury-dogged Carroll was “true” but insisted he has been totally professional since the Croat’s summer arrival at West Ham.

The former Newcastle star, who has played only 83 minutes this season, is in contention to return to action for tomorrow’s trip to Crystal Palace.

And Bilic said: “I didn’t have to become West Ham manager to know Andy Carroll. I heard sometimes he gets injured because he was not totally dedicated to his football.

“There is definitely something behind them. They are true stories. It is very rare for people to make up stories – there has to be something there.

“I can only make comments about what I have seen since I am here. He has trained as a great professional. His training has been top class and that is why we are expecting to have big-time benefits from him.”

Instead of throwing the striker straight into the season, Bilic has had him undergo six weeks of intensive training to prevent future injuries.

Carroll still hopes to get in the England squad for Euro 2016 but admits he faces a fight to regain his starting place at West Ham.

“There is a lot of competition but only a few places up for grabs,” he said. “It’s also has been a while since I played for England.

“If I can get goals and games under my belt, hopefully I can get back in there.”
