It is the first time England have failed to advance from the group stage at a World Cup, and the demoralise­d side draw final match 0-0 with Costa Rica to finish bottom of the group. Hodgson refuses to resign and lack of alternativ­es mean FA stand by their man. 2015 England qualify for European Championsh­ips in France with a 100 per cent record, only the sixth time this has been achieved in the competitio­n’s history. 2016 Revealed that Hodgson must reach the quarter-finals if he is to keep his job. However, England need only to beat Iceland, the lowest ranked team left in the tournament, to progress to the last eight. Defeat spells the end for Hodgson.
