BBC2 9pm Whether you’ve visited on holiday or just seen it on TV and in the movies, New York has something almost mythical about it.

It’s America’s biggest and busiest city, home to 8.5million people, and keeping a metropolis like that going is one hell of a feat.

This new three-part series explores some of the astonishing daily systems that help make the Big Apple function.

Presented by Anita Rani, Ade Adepitan, Dan Snow and engineer Ant Anstead, it kicks off in the world’s biggest railway terminal – Grand Central Station.

And even if you’re a seasoned city dweller used to the rush-hour crush, this is eye-opening stuff.

There’s busy – and then there’s New York busy. We’re talking 46 platforms and more than 700 trains a day.

But it’s still not enough to cope with the incredible demand. So for the past decade, engineers have been working on creating a brand new terminal beneath the existing station. Costing $10bn, it’s the US’s biggest ever transport project – known as the East Side Access.
