Ben’s now a Fiji chief
BEN RYAN, the Englishman who coached Fiji to Olympic Sevens glory, has been given his own place in the sun as a reward and made an honorary chief.
The 44-year-old has been gifted a three-acre plot of land on the rugby-mad islands and a traditional name, Ratu Peni Raiyani Latianara, by the grateful people of Serua province.
Ryan has already received the Companion of the Order of Fiji – the country’s highest honour – from president Jioji Konrote.
Fiji beat Great Britain 43-7 in the final to win the gold medal – their first in any sport at the Games.
Ryan has quit his job as head coach but is being targeted by Japan.
