Winner making front page boos
NEWSPAPERS around the world reacted in horror at the US presidential election bombshell.
Sydney’s Daily Telegraph wiped out its front page with a picture of Donald Trump giving a thumbs-up, with the headline “W.T.F”, usually meaning “what the f***”, but in this case apparently referring to the question, “will Trump flourish?”
The New York Daily News depicted America’s national flag upside down – a maritime distress signal – in front of a brooding image of the White House, dubbing it a “House of Horrors”. Canada’s French Journal de Montreal’s front page screamed in English “Oh my God!” with a large image of the billionaire’s smirking face.
In Barcelona, morning daily paper El Periodico showed Trump with an aggressive expression and stance, with a pointed finger, alongside the headline “Dios perdone a America”, which translates as “God forgive America”.
The Miami Herald played it safe, given that Florida was a key battleground with supporters on both sides, stating: “It’s Trump – Florida set the stage for victory against Clinton.”
Meanwhile in Scotland, the Buchan Observer’s website kept it understated – and local.
It carried the story with the headline: “Aberdeenshire business owner wins presidential election.”
Trump, whose mother was from the Isle of Lewis, owns a golf course in Aberdeenshire and has visited the area several times over the years.
