LOST UNDER A BIG BLACK CLOUD
Dear Coleen
What do you do when you just feel lost and as if your head is under a big black cloud constantly? I feel like this most days now and I’m unsure what to do about it.
I’ve had a rough few months, which could be at the root of it, and I honestly don’t see it getting better right now.
What’s your advice? I’m hoping there’s light at the end of the tunnel.
Coleen says
Of course there’s light at the end of the tunnel. I think what can happen is that one thing can make you feel low and then other things – even the smallest things – pile on top of that and seem overwhelming.
And it can be hard to see through that fog. You don’t feel you can get through it, but you can. The first step is acknowledging it, which you have. Don’t be scared to ask for help, whether that’s going to your GP and explaining how you feel or contacting an organisation like the mental health charity Mind (mind. org.uk), which has lots of great advice and information, and will help you to realise that you’re not alone in how you feel and that you can come out the other side.
You need help to start putting things into perspective.
I have very good friends who have experienced severe depression and they have all managed to use the help out there – in the form of counselling and/ or medication to get better. It can be a long process, so don’t expect miracles overnight, but even working towards it will help you to feel more in control and that you’re doing something positive to feel better.
Don’t be afraid to confide in a close relative or friend too.
