TOP MOTOCROSS STARS FLYING IN

- BY FRASER ADDECOTT

The all-action Arenacross series makes a full-throttle return to the UK in the New Year.

If you’ve never been, it’s actually two events for the price of one.

First there’s professional motocross racing on a hardpacked, tight, twisting indoor circuit. And in between, crowds are wowed by some of the world’s best freestyle motocross – or FMX – riders as they hit the ramps to launch themselves 40ft into the air to perform all manner of tricks, whips and back-flips.

With £200,000 in prize money on offer, the UK series attracts the top stars.

The 2017 series featuring all three of the previous Arenacross Pro class winners, as well as British motocross champ Tommy Searle.

Leading FMX exponents will also hit the arenas, including Spanish multi X-Games medallist Edgar Torronteras, 6ft 4in Czech Petr Pilat and ace Brit rider Jamie Squibb, fresh from his Nitro Circus stint.

Each of the seven events features a three-hour programme of racing and stunts, as well as a reverberating sound track, strobe lights, lasers, pyrotechnics and host commentator DJ BBQ aka Christian Stevenson.

The series kicks off in Manchester on Saturday, January 7, followed by Glasgow, Birmingham, Belfast, Sheffield and London.

Two intrepid travellers are close to completing a 12,000km ride – on 125cc Peugeot Django scooters.

Samuel Rodriguez and Ambroise Prince (right) are travelling from Paris to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, to honour an epic ride made 60 years ago.

The two friends were inspired to make the journey after coming across the story of French soldiers Serge Gracium and Michel Vaslin, who rode Peugeot S57 scooters between Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City) and the French capital in 1956.

Samuel and Ambroise left Paris in August and have so far crossed France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey, India and Myanmar. They are currently in Thailand and hope to complete the trip by the end of the month.
