Trump’s win will shake the world

- FIONA PARKER Edited by

IN the wake of maybe the biggest American upset ever, Vladimir Putin must be rubbing his hands together.

He wanted Trump to take charge because it is to his advantage. This puts world peace seriously at risk.

Trump also says he is going to build a wall across its border with Mexico. Is Canada next?

It is ironic that the new president “congratulated” Hillary Clinton on a “hard-fought campaign”.

It was nothing of the sort. It was the most vulgar charade in the history of the US. Will he now have Hillary arrested as promised?

The American people have elected an egotistical bigot who does not know right from wrong.

United States of America? For most of the world it is now the Disunited States. In God we trust? Let us all hope that we can. Bill Cook, Teignmouth, Devon

In the past few decades America has had every type of president, from the not-so-bright Bush junior to its first black leader. Perhaps a woman president was all too much.? The problem with Donald Trump is that he’s made a lot of promises about what he intends to do when he takes charge in January. If he doesn’t do any of it he’ll be labelled a hypocrite. However, many of his proposals are dangerous. One can only hope he’ll listen to wiser heads around him or his party will vote the more extreme things down. After all, the Republican-led Congress stopped many of Obama’s reforms, so maybe the non-Trump Republicans could do the same to The Donald? Geoff Willmetts Bridgwater, Somerset As America gets used to its new president, the rest of the world also has a lot to get used to.

Trump assures the UK the so-called ‘special relationship’ will continue. Well, I’m not sure about that one.

But what really concerns me is whether he will approach his presidency with the overblown rhetoric and bombastic intent he displayed during his election campaign.

And what will Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s reaction be to this aggressive, wall-building American? Be afraid, be very afraid! David Shaw Tamworth, Staffs

Now that Trump has become president of the US I can foresee two things.

With the prospect of Trump and Putin becoming pally, I fear it could be Russia and the USA against the rest of the world. And with his rampant Islamophobia, I imagine this could lead to a backlash no one would want. Rosemary Toop, Taunton, Somerset

The US must now come to terms with its new president, and many Americans will be shocked that so many chose such a man to rule their nation. America risks becoming a country riddled by divisions. It was divided by its civil war of 1861-65, and history may repeat itself. It will take a very long time to heal the wounds but they have made their bed and now have to lie in it. Unfortunately, the rest of the world is affected by this too. Here we have a man with no former political experience and, more importantly to us, he has no experience of international relations. It remains to be seen whether the rest of the world accepts or rejects Donald Trump. I fear the worst. God help us all. Reg Barrett South Minster, Essex
