Gary Barlow: I’ve just washed my hair for the first time in 14 years

GARY Barlow has come clean about what some fans might think is a dirty little secret – he went 14 years without washing his hair.

The Take That singer said he shampooed his mop at the weekend, and revealed the length of time since he last did it.

And he pooh-poohed any suggestion that what he was saying was a sham.

Gary, 46, tweeted: “It’s such an important day I’ve washed my hair! First time in... 14 years! #nojoke.”

It means he had not scrubbed it since 2003.

A fan said: “Next time you wash your hair you’ll be 60.” Another said, “what hair?”, prompting Gary to retort, “cheeky beggar”.

One of his Twitter followers teased the pop star by saying, “I thought the wig maker” would do the shampooing.

Another fan suggested Gary should dye his hair blond like he did in the 1990s. But he replied he did not have enough of it left. Gary, who is starring on BBC1 talent contest Let It Shine after a stint as head judge on ITV show The X Factor, is not the only celeb to have ditched shampoo.

Model Miranda Kerr and singer Adele have reportedly gone shampoo free.

Some people say it can encourage hair growth. Two years ago beauty bloggers dubbed the shampoo backlash the “no poo” movement, based on a belief that natural oils clean the hair.

But trichologist Glenn Lyons, from the Philip Kingsley Clinic in Mayfair, London, has said: “Natural oils do not protect hair. Oil is produced at the scalp and brushing it with a comb as the only form of cleaning will only spread it down a few centimetres, not the whole length of the hair.”

Let It Shine is the search for five men to co-star in a Take That musical.

Gary has said of the future production: “We’re all excited. We’re all producers of the show... It’s a celebration of our career.

“Hopefully this music will live on way beyond our capability to perform.

“When we’re in wheelchairs being pushed around an old folks’ home, this musical will still be touring.”
