School where children like to get the slipper
They calm kids and help ‘boost grades’
LOOKS like this school has a lot of happy little soles…
A primary has become the first in Britain to allow pupils to wear slippers in class after a study found it helped them relax and get better exam grades.
And the move has proved a hit with both the children and teachers, who are also wearing them.
Deputy head Michelle Hall said: “One of our staff suggested the idea after seeing some research.
“The children were very excited. It has been a success so far.
“Most of the children and even some members of staff are wearing slippers now.
“Our pupils are very well-behaved but there have been some changes.
“There is less stomping around and they are a lot calmer and seem very relaxed. The children love it.” A 10-year study by Bournemouth University found slippers create a calmer and quieter environment.
There are claims the calmness in school reduces bullying.
The slipper system is widely used in Scandinavia – where youngsters take their snow boots off before entering class.
It was introduced to Findern Primary School in Derbyshire. Pupil Maisie Futcher, 10, said: “I think it’s a great idea because I love wearing my slippers at home. Wearing them at school makes me feel relaxed and helps me to learn. We all love it.”
Most parents backed the idea. Laura Hall, 44, said: “I think it’s fantastic.
“You don’t want to be uncomfortable all day especially in a learning environment.
“Anything that is proved to aid learning, I’m all for. It’s done widely in other parts of the world and been a success.”
But not everyone was happy at the slipper idea. One dad, who wished to remain nameless, said: “This is a load of new-age nonsense and I can’t see how allowing slippers in the classroom is going to benefit anybody.
“You see teenagers going to Tesco is their pyjamas and this kind of policy just encourages that sort of slobbish behaviour.”
