Broadchurch lacks a crime romance..

-

DAVID Tennant has promised Broadchurch fans they will not be disappointed by the ending of the third and final series.

But he has ruled out any romance between DI Alec Hardy and Olivia Colman’s character DS Ellie Miller, although he admits they do behave like “a cranky old married couple”.

Tennant says writer Chris Chibnall strikes “the perfect note” with the story, which centres on a serious sexual assault in the seaside town.

He adds: “It leaves them exactly where you’d expect them to be left. I had myriad feelings about it.”

Asked whether Hardy and Miller end up in a romance, he scoffs: “Have you seen the series? That’s not their bag.” But he adds: “They are both damaged individuals, for different reasons, who don’t have many friends and need each other. It’s nice to find them in a different stage of their lives.”

Chibnall promises the third run of the ITV hit will still be about the characters rebuilding and carrying on.

He says: “Broadchurch has always been about the emotional aftermath of crime. I think that there’s a sense of a story ending by going back to the beginning.” Tennant insists it was necessary for the latest crime to differ from the murder of series one.

He says: “This made sense. It couldn’t have been another body on the beach – it wouldn’t have the truthfulness you’d expect from this series.”

Julie Hesmondhalgh, who plays rape victim Trisha Winterman, was drawn to the part because it was different to the norm. She says: “She’s an ordinary looking, middle-aged woman, which was interesting. Not your usual young girl being chased through the woods.”

Chibnall went to great lengths to keep the plot twists secret and wants fans to avoid watching on catch-up.

He says: “The aim is to get the show to the audience so that everyone experiences it together. It’s a live viewing experience so turn up on the night.”
