RAFA: TOON BIG ENEMY IS NERVES

- BY SIMON BIRD

RAFA BENITEZ admits Newcastle must deal with their “anxiety” as they face the biggest eight days of the season.

The Geordies can see the finishing line in their promotion bid – with history suggesting they need another 20 points to go up.

The 90-point target – enough for automatic promotion in the last 20 years – could be reduced if they can damage their rivals with trips to Brighton, Huddersfield and Reading.

This draw was not an ideal way to launch that run of games – which starts at the Amex Stadium tomorrow – gifting City two goals.

But there was a second-half comeback, and a slight lack of cutting edge without Dwight Gayle (above), who could be back from injury this week.

Benitez (top) said: “We can improve a little and it’s a question of managing our anxiety. We are at the top of the table and must have confidence in ourselves.

“How do we do that? Try to relax and stay calm. In my case I’m quite calm. I can be furious but it depends on the situation.

“I have to create solutions not give problems to my players. It’s a question of experience for the players. They need to know we will have games like this one.”

Aaron Wilbraham headed the opener behind a static back line appealing for offside, while a defensive mix-up gave David Cotterill a tap-in.

Then the scrappy comeback, Jonjo Shelvey forcing home off Korey Smith’s backside, and Ciaran Clark nodding in.

Benitez needs Gayle, troubled by a hamstring, back quickly.

He added: “He’s been training and will train on Sunday and we will see.”
