Sting for boss of Dettol firm

- WITH TRICIA PHILLIPS

The boss of Dettol maker Reckitt Benckier pocketed £14.6million last year – despite taking a cut after a shareholder revolt.

The Slough-based firm behind Nurofen painkillers and Durex condoms said it decided to “exercise discretion” by reducing Rakesh Kapoor’s package after a scandal in South Korea. Reckett was one of several firms whose disinfectants were linked to the deaths of more than 90 people.

The firm said Kapoor’s bonus was cut despite the scandal dating back to before he took over as chief executive in 2011. It follows a backlash from Reckitt’s shareholders at last year’s annual general meeting after Kapoor was handed £25m in pay and perks for 2015.

Reckett joins a number of firms which have trimmed fat cat pay ahead of what is expected to be a fiery AGM season in the coming months. Two-thirds of people over-estimate the strength of the pound when it comes to how much it’s worth compared to the euro.

One in 10 believe you get more than 1.5 euros to the pound. In fact, the actual current rate is around 1.12.

Over the past five years it has never reached 1.5, according to exchange firm No1 Currency.

That means as many as six million people could end up spending 30% more than anticipated while on holiday in Europe this summer.

The golden rule is not to exchange at the airport – with a captive audience, the rates they offer are never best.

Pre-ordering online and picking it up or having it delivered is one of the best ways to secure a better rate.

Research from Which? has revealed that loading up a prepaid card is one of the cheapest ways to spend overseas.
