BOYFRIEND IS BORING AND UNSOCIABLE

-

Dear Coleen

I have been dating a guy for almost a year now, but I’m not sure I was ever really into him. I only get to see him a couple of times a month and, when I do, we just sit on his couch watching cartoons with his little brother. He always promises that we will go out but we never do. I cannot even get him to go on a walk with me.

Now he has decided that he doesn’t want to go to my prom with me – he would rather I came over and watched a movie, as always.

There is another guy I’ve known for three years and he’s my best friend, and although he graduated last year, he said he’d take me to the prom so I’m not third wheeling on my friends.

When I talk to him, I can’t help imagining us together and I know he has strong feelings for me. I feel I should break up with my boyfriend, but my friends are telling me I need to fix my relationship. I don’t really think there’s anything worth fixing.

What do you reckon?

Coleen says

I think you’re right and you should trust your instincts – get rid of him! You’re both so young, yet he can’t even muster up the enthusiasm to go to the prom which, for most teenagers, is a really exciting thing. Why do you want to be with someone so boring at your age?

I think it’s lovely that your friend has offered to take you, so I’d say go for it. And explain to your boyfriend that things aren’t going to work between the two of you because you want to go out with your friends and be sociable and not sit round at his house watching cartoons in your free time.

Don’t feel you should have a boyfriend just because your friends have them. You certainly don’t need one like him!
