Credit Corbyn as a man of peace

-

I think it’s shameful that Jeremy Corbyn is now being vilified because of his views on nuclear defence, which in my opinion are being taken out of context by many Tories.

Of course, Corbyn has personal views on the deployment of nuclear weapons like every person in this country. And, to his credit, he is a person of peace, fearing a catastrophic nuclear war.

This is sensible in today’s troubled world. Would you rather have an itchy finger on the trigger – or somebody who’d explore every possible avenue before pressing the button?

Just look at the American and North Korean situation, which could escalate into a nuclear war.

It seems to me Jeremy Corbyn is far stronger than Theresa May, who is the queen of U-turns and lacks debating skills. Bill Cook, Teignmouth, Devon. I see the Tories have jumped on the myth that Labour is weak on defence after Corbyn’s comments on Andrew Marr. Could this be the same Tory party that has slashed funding for all three military services since 2010? Only last week we heard claims that members of the Parachute Regiment now lack the funding to train its soldiers to actually use parachutes. Don’t fall for Tory propaganda – look at the facts. John Bainbridge, Penrith If the Labour Party is to win the general election on June 8 it must come out fighting on the issue of Trident and expose the theory that we need a nuclear deterrent for the nonsense that I think it is.

A lot of fuss is being made about whether Corbyn would press the button. I don’t believe anyone in their right mind is ever going to press a nuclear button in aggression or retaliation. And certainly not a practising Christian like Prime Minister Theresa May, who believes that one day she will have to answer for her actions. S Smith, Preston, Lancs I have just watched the Andrew Marr interview with Corbyn and I’m not in the least surprised that Labour is now so far behind in the polls.

He may be very sincere in his beliefs, and I do John Potsey, Bedfont, Middx agree with some of them. But he is he is just like so many other politicians who outrightly refuse to answer any pertinent or awkward questions. And when it comes down to negotiations with EU, he is so naive I think it would be disastrous. Whatever people’s feelings are about Jeremy Corbyn as Labour’s leader, I hope they will be voting for Labour’s policies rather than him as an individual.

The party’s policies support all aspects of British life, child care, education, health, retirement, workplace, travel, housing, inclusiveness and a Brexit which will reflect the true will of all fair-minded people. Alan Baber, North Somerset Is it any surprise to see the Labour Party trailing so far behind in the opinion polls when it seems the party has gone backwards to the 1980s when Michael Foot was leader? The party is deeply split, including a large number of Corbyn’s own MPs who do not support their leader. They no longer appeal to the middle ground and face a crushing defeat in June.
