He’s had his Phil... let’s wish him well

- FIONA PARKER Edited by

At 95, I think the Duke of Edinburgh has done more than enough for his country. He has served alongside our Queen for decades, doing a great deal for charities and the good of the country.

Whatever time he has left, I sincerely hope he enjoys it – he’s certainly earned a rest.

To those who are against the Royal Family, I say – they bring billions into this country in terms of tourism and jobs.

Prince Philip’s retirement from public duties at the good age of 95 is well-deserved.

He certainly isn’t lazy. After all the years of hard graft, finally he will be able to relax.

I’m hoping the Queen will now take a leaf out of her husband’s book and stand down as well.

It would give Prince William a chance to take hold of the royal reigns as I believe he should be our next monarch.

We have a general election campaign going on and the public is beginning to see through the sham politics of Theresa May. But then Prince Philip announces his retirement, thus hijacking the media for days on end. The announcement could easily have waited. Am I being cynical or is the establishment closing ranks?

Regardless of how you feel about the Royal Family, Prince Philip is a stalwart with regards to royal protocol.

He married for life and has done his duty for the woman he loves.

My daughter has carved out a career as a youth worker and does outdoor

leadership thanks to her hard work and the opportunity afforded to her by Prince Philip to do her Duke of Edinburgh Award.

We will be at Buckingham Palace in two weeks’ time so that she can receive her final gold award.

Happy retirement, Prince Philip.

Kevin Maguire was spot on with his comments about Prince Philip (Mirror, May 5). If this gaffe-prone royal had been a politician, he would have had to step down a long time ago because of his insults and slurs. I wish him well in his retirement but, like Kevin, I’ll certainly not miss him.

Glenn Bagshaw via email

I sincerely hope the Duke of Edinburgh enjoys his retirement from official duties. He thoroughly deserves a long and happy retirement after serving this country so tirelessly for over 70 years.
