HANDCUFFED to his hospital bed, a man is charged with murdering a British doctor and his fiancee in the luxury apartment building where he was previously a security guard.

Bampumim Teixeira burst into the £1.5million penthouse of Dr Richard Field and Dr Lina Bolanos on Friday.

The anaesthetist, 49, managed to text one of his friends, saying an “armed man” had entered their home. But police arrived to find the couple dead – with their hands tied and their throats cut.

Teixeira was hit in the hand, stomach and leg in a shootout with police before he was held. Officers later found a “backpack in a conspicuous area” in the apartment that was filled with jewellery, thought to belong to Dr Bolanos, 38.

Teixeira, 30, was arraigned on two counts of murder by Judge Michael Bolden in the makeshift court at Tufts Medical Centre in Boston, Massachusetts. He entered two not-guilty pleas.

The judge ordered Teixeira, who was only recently released after being jailed for bank robberies, to be held without bail. He is due in court on June 8.

Before 2016, Teixeira had worked as a security guard for Palladion Services, whose clients included Court Square Press Condominiums in Boston – where Dr Field and Dr Bolanos lived.

Police learned about his job while probing him over a bank robbery. He got nine months last September and was released weeks ago. District Attorney Daniel Conley dismissed initial reports that Teixeira knew his victims, adding: “Nor is there evidence to explain why he would attack them so viciously.”

Dr Field, from Hammersmith, West London, worked at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School, and Dr Bolanos was a paediatric anaesthesiologist at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. Devastated colleagues paid tribute to the pair. A statement from Dr Field’s workmates read: “His tragic and sudden passing leaves an inescapable void.” Massachusetts Eye and Ear said: “The community is deeply saddened.” Dr Bolanos had called off plans to have her boss over for dinner on Friday as Dr Field was ill. Her intended guest was Dr Sunil Eappen – the father of tragic Matthew Eappen, who British nanny Louise Woodward shook to death in 1997, aged eight months.
