ON THIS DAY 33 YEARS AGO (1984) Our front page told of the arrest of miners’ union chief Arthur Scargill as he led a group of 30 pickets at the Orgreave coking plant in South Yorkshire. It led to heavy fighting between the striking miners and police. 60 YEARS AGO (1957) Marilyn Monroe’s husband, the playwright Arthur Miller, was found guilty of being in contempt of US Congress after refusing to reveal the names of alleged Communist writers with whom he met 10 years previously. 101 YEARS AGO (1916) The Battle of Jutland, the only major naval skirmish of the First World War, was fought between the British Grand Fleet and German High Seas Fleet. Some 8,500 sailors perished. Despite losing more ships, the British claimed victory as the German fleet was put out of action for the rest of the war. BIRTHDAYS Actor Clint Eastwood is 87.
