NO PORT IN STORM FOR DUMPED IAN

MANCHESTER UNITED’S bonus for winning the inaugural Premier League title was £2.4million. Bottom club Nottingham Forest received £1.1m.

Chelsea, this year’s champions, earned £151m while rock bottom Sunderland were paid £94m.

THE leading marksman in the Prem’s debut season was Teddy Sheringham.

He started the campaign with Nottingham Forest before being sold to Tottenham Hotspur for £2.1million. In fact, his departure was seen as one of the key reasons for Forest’s eventual relegation.

Sheringham scored Forest’s first Prem goal against Liverpool in August 1992, which was also the first ever live goal shown on Sky Sports. A week later he joined Spurs.

Lord Ted ended the campaign with 22 goals in all, 21 for Spurs.

The PFA Player of the Year was Aston Villa’s Paul McGrath. Chris Waddle, after returning from three years in France, was voted the FWA Footballer of the Year for his efforts with Sheffield Wednesday. IN these days of trigger-happy owners and chairmen, the sack race 25 years ago was very different.

It’s incredible to discover that, in the first season of the newly-formed Premier League, only one boss was fired. Compare that with EIGHT changes in the Prem last season.

Chelsea sacked their manager Ian Porterfield (above) on February 15, 1993.

The Blues had made a strong start to the campaign and, at one point, were fourth in the Premier League. But a run of 12 league and cup games without a win sparked the Scot’s downfall. He was replaced by former Chelsea hero David Webb. Chairman Ken Bates was at his most ingenious. He not only persuaded Webb to take the job on a three-month trial, but announced Porterfield’s exit to surprised callers on the club’s telephone information service.
