WORRIED SCOTT: DO NOT MAKE IT BRUTAL
ADAM SCOTT has called for tournament organisers to avoid a “brutal” course set-up at the US Open next week.
The USGA traditionally seeks even par to be the winning score at the toughest Major, with four of the last champions carding over-par totals.
Dustin Johnson won at Oakmont last year with a four-under par score leading to fears that Erin Hills will be made harder with thick rough and lightning greens.
Scott (below), the 2013 Masters champion, said: “Let’s just have something that’s a challenge and interesting, not just playing brutal. Maybe it’s time to do away with the even-par target.
“The ball is in their court. Hopefully they get it right this time, just from a playability standpoint.
“If their major pinnacle event requires courses to be the way they are, it doesn’t set a good example.”
Rory McIlroy (above) has confirmed he is fit to play the second Major of the season, starting next Thursday after recovering from a rib injury.
“I am ready for Erin Hills and looking forward to playing there for the first time,” he said.
But Phil Mickelson, who has been US Open runner-up six times, is planning to miss the event to attend his daughter Amanda’s high school graduation on the first day.
“My daughter is graduating and I am going to be there,” he said. “It comes on the Thursday of the Open and there’s no way I can make it.”
