I’ve given birth to my brother

Daughter acts as her mum’s surrogate

A WOMAN has given birth to her own brother after offering to act as a surrogate for her mum.

Jacky Edwards, 47, was unable to carry a baby with her new husband Paul, having had a hysterectomy.

So her eldest daughter Katherine, 30, stepped in, and little Caspian was born.

Jacky said: “It was just the most amazing moment. Caspian was handed straight to me because Katherine didn’t want to bond with him and she wanted me to have those moments.

“We look at him and pinch ourselves because it seemed impossible that Paul and I would ever have a baby together.”

The ex-NHS worker had a hysterectomy 12 years ago following a traumatic pregnancy with her fifth child.

Jacky was widowed aged 40 and was certain she did not want more children, but then she met chemist Paul, 48, in 2013. They got married a year later.

Jacky said: “He loved me so much that he really wanted a child with me. I was reticent at first, but I knew Paul would always be a tiny bit sad if we didn’t.” The couple researched surrogacy and visited IVF clinics, but they were unable to help as Jacky had gone through menopause. Katherine, a mum of two, said: “I knew if I didn’t offer to be mum’s surrogate, she’d struggle to find one.” After drawing up an agreement, with £1,000-a-month expenses for Katherine, she was artificially inseminated with Paul’s sperm. Jacky and Paul went to all the scans and Paul cut the cord when Caspian was born last May. Katherine, who lives in Holland with Navy worker husband Sam, 27, said: “There were times when I thought, ‘Have I made a mistake?’ “But when I gave birth he was handed straight to my mum. I saw the three of them together and it was amazing.” Jacky, of South Horrington, Somerset, added: “He will absolutely know where he came from. “Four people created him in a circle of love. Katherine is still Caspian’s sister, but there is a gold star attached.” Nicola Scott of Porter Dodson law firm in Somerset, who advised the family, said of the case: “It was no more legally complex than any other surrogacy arrangement. The law always treats the surrogate as the legal mother.”
