Arshavin top of the Kops.. but still frustrated

- BY JOHN CROSS

ANDREY ARSHAVIN claimed a remarkable Premier League first at Anfield on the night of April 21, 2009. The Arsenal forward became the first player to score four goals in a match and fail to end up on the winning side. Arshavin scored once in the first half to put Arsenal ahead and the three more after the break in a rollercoaster 4-4 draw which effectively ended Liverpool’s title hopes. It was the 19th time a player had scored four goals in a Prem match but the Russian was an enigma at Arsenal. Despite some special moments, the £12million signing rejoined Zenit St Petersburg on loan in 2012, three years after moving to English football. His style rarely fitted in at Arsenal, he made constant jibes about English football and eventually got his wish to leave. But that night at Anfield lives in the memory as a teaser of what might have been for Arsenal.
