Britain has been left speechless

-

THE Queen’s speech was written by a humiliated Government completely out of touch with the people. It’s not worth the vellum it’s written on. There was no state coach, only a limousine to whisk the Queen away to Royal Ascot. Her Majesty must be mesmerised by the present chaos in our country.

The beleaguered Tories have not even struck a deal yet with the extremist DUP.

In two years’ time this country will be crippled unless we get our act together. The UK is a laughing stock on the world stage at the moment. It’s like the Mad Hatter’s tea party. Bill Cook, Teignmouth, Devon Surely right-thinking Brits are disgusted with Theresa May for attempting to make a deal with the Northern Irish nasty party just to save her skin. If this Tory Government lasts another five years it will make life even more hellish for the working people of this country. Mrs May is worse than Margaret Thatcher – families, OAPs, the poor and disabled are all suffering under austerity policies. But three cheers to Dennis Skinner for livening up this damp squib of a Queen’s Speech. D J Sewell Redcar, Cleveland Your front page headline said it all, “Now even the crackpots can’t work with May” ( June 21). The Queen’s Speech was a shambles with the PM failing to make an alliance with the It seems the arrogance of PM Theresa May knows no limits. After weeks of electioneering and warning us all of the consequences of a Labour Government, or indeed a coalition of Labour and any other In scenes not witnessed since Harold Wilson’s minority Labour government in 1974, where the Queen’s Speech was reduced to little more than a press conference, this week’s State Opening of Parliament was a snub to Her Majesty. The echoes of history are loud and clear. Marina Ratcliffe, Stafford, Staffs hardline DUP. What hope is there for Brexit? Theresa May might still be in office but she is not in power. Dave Mellor, Warrington, Cheshire progressive party, she now states she wants all parties to join with her for the good of the country. Mick Streets, Chesterfield, Derby Having lived for over 80 years, I’m afraid that I am now less optimistic about our future than at any time since the awful years of the Second World War.

Much as I would love to see free education, limitless healthcare, higher wages and so on, the truth is these are unaffordable. There is no such thing as a free lunch.

Hiking debt levels will only result in long-term damage and it will be left to our grandchildren to sort out.

Surely, our politicians should work together to tackle the serious problems that we currently face? Regrettably, I’m not holding my breath. John Allen, Uckfield, East Sussex What a farce the Queen’s Speech was with no mention of many Tory manifesto promises. Our Government looks more incompetent by the day. May should just do the right thing and go. Pete Grant, South Shields, Tyne & Wear
